Saunt Cartas, also referred to as Ma Cartas, is a figure of ancient Arbre history credited with founding the first maths and starting Mathic Society when in the -1500s A.R. she writes her work Sæculum.

She is mentioned several times during the novel Anathem in terms of "rolling over in her chalcedony sarcophagus" whenever Fraa Erasmas or some other avout shows little or no hesitation in breaking the Discipline.

Her name recalls that of Laterran philosopher Rene Descartes.
