A term used by the mathic world to describe a person who believes in a God or gods. A minority of avout are deolaters. In the novel's language the term is derived from the name Deät, the daughter of Cnoüs who believed that his vision was a sign that humans should worship gods themselves rather than physical idols. This a pun on the theological concept of idolatry, which Deät is explicitly condemning.
